She sang two working girls to sleep
Down in the drunk tank, after Paddy's Day Parade.
She prayed the lord, their souls to keep
She kept their jewellery and almost every cent they made

She found a place down on 9th Avenue
Cross the street, down by the park
There she entertained in royal style
Through to the dawn from after dark.

She was just 26
With her hair in ribbons and in bows
Needles, Kohl and tricks.
She was beautiful
And it shows


With all her dignity impervious to rain
She sat in cafes way too long
Not in the window
Behind the pain
But in the back where she belongs

She'd make a paper last an hour or two
And as the storm passed so did she
And as the days grow colder and confused
She had some place she could be
